The new mvc:resources error should really only be causing problems during development and really only if you're using an IDE like Eclipse or STS. At runtime, so long as you have the latest Spring 3.0.4.RELEASE jars on your application classpath, you shouldn't be running into any problems with the mvc:resources element.
