  • community using spring mvc

For my bachelor thesis I'm writing an online community using spring-mvc.

The community should be something simple, header on top with logo, a "nice" banner and some statistical informations like registered users and so on,
    navigation on left/right side
    main information in the middle
    footer on the bottom

Currently I'm thinking of doing this with
Tomcat for doing the serving and a servlet for each "module" (the bigger use cases), say one for private messaging, one for userprofiles, one for registration etc.
For a congruent layout, I'm thinking of using Apache Tiles.

I'm now wondering if this is really the best solution here, as I've read somewhere about portlets and portal servers and I'm not sure if I'm reinventing the wheel by doing the community/layout thing with Apache Tiles, also because I'm quite new to the java web world.

If here's anyone with some experience with this, I would be glad to hear his/her success story and advice.

    Thanks a lot,
