  • Eclipse 3.7 Indigo update site down?

    Hi,
I'm getting this when I try to use the 3.7 nightly updatesite with Indigo RC3:
    No repository found at http://dist.springsource.com/snapsho...S/nightly/e3.7.
    Has it moved somewhere?
    Thanks,
    Johan

    Hey Johan!

When I out that URL into the "Install New Software" dialog in an Eclipse 3.7, I can see the categories and components from STS.
Do you see an error message? Maybe a firewall/proxy issue?

    Cheers,
    -Martin

      Hello Martin,
It must have been some temporary problem yesterday because when I retried the URL today everything worked OK.
      Thanks,
      Johan

          Hey!

We have changed the layout of our update sites slightly to improve performance. So access to the standard STS update sites should be better now.

          HTH,
          Martin

              Hey!

Can you post the details from the error message, please? Just wanna find out whether the problem is really the release update site or another one... Its just a bit curious that the release update is producing the problem, since it is hosted on a CDN, which should be pretty reliable. But there might be issues with firewalls and virus-scanners which are scanning accessed files in between... Could that be the case in your setting?

              Cheers,
              -Martin

                I am receiving following error:
Unable to read repository at http://dist.springsource.com/release....7/content.xml.

                Permission denied: connect

When opening URL in browser I get AccessDenied error.

                  Hi!

That is correct, those URLs don't exist, since it is a composite update site. You should be able to access:
                  http://dist.springsource.com/release...iteContent.xml

But Eclipse/STS should figure that out automatically and contact is as a composite update site.
As an alternative, you could add those referenced sites (that you see when accessing the link above from within your browser) manually to the list of available update sites (via the preferences for update/install).

                  HTH,
                  Martin

It seems that page has been fixed. As I mentioned in the post I was receiving xml with AccessDenied error message when I tried to access link from the browser.

Now I am receiving same error message for the following URL:
                    http://dist.springsource.com/release.../e3.7/p2.index

That URL doesn't exist either. It is also a composite update site since quite some time now. But your installation seem to have some stale data cached. Maybe removing and adding the update site helps to wipe out the cache data from Eclipse.

                      HTH,
                      Martin

                        I'm currently getting a:
                        PHP Code:
Communication with repository at http://dist.springsource.com/release/TOOLS/update/e3.7 failed.
                        Read timed out
Any other people having the same issue?

                        Also:

                        PHP Code:
                        C:\Users\XXX>ping dist.springsource.com

                        Pinging s3
                        -1-w.amazonaws.com [72.21.195.66with 32 bytes of data:
                        Request timed out.
                        Request timed out.
                        Request timed out.
                        Request timed out
EDIT: doing a couple of retries and having quite some patience, the updates did manage to get get fetched...any tips on checking if such a connection issue resides with us, or the update site being down? (as ICMP service seems to be blocked I can't ping it)

This looks like there is a problem connecting the update site. Maybe you find the report accessing some non-existing URLs in the error logs as well. What we found out is:

                          - The update mechanism of Eclipse/STS is trying to access those non-existing update site URLs to find out what kind of update site it is. So this is the normal way of p2 accessing the update site and shouldn't cause any problems.
                          - The update site is hosted on Amazon S3 to avoid downtimes and availability problems. That shouldn't cause problems.
                          - Sometimes the network uses a proxy/filewall/virus scanning that can cause problems when not configured correctly (take a look at comments #12 and #13 of this report http://forum.springsource.org/showth...ery-slow/page2)

As said, the update site is hosted in Amazon S3 and I don't think that the Amazon machines let you ping them.
