    It depends on how you use the tools given to you. I can create a project with a minimal dependency (probably no dependency) on spring and be perfectly able to use spring for dependency injection, jms, data access etc. (although if you use plain Jdbc or Jms using those tools can really help you). Although using spring integration I could JMS/RMI/HTTP/HESSIAN enable an application without a single line of spring dependend java code and simply configure some stuff in xml.

    I don't say it is bad to use spring in your code I'm merely saying that sometimes you can get a cleaner api/code without spring (and probably saves you a lot of headaches when you upgrade a version of spring).

    Maven is quite easy to learn and really saves you time and headaches searching for jar files (and might give you a couple of new ones for jar conflicts ).
