  • Can Spring Batch run outside of a container?

We are planning on rewriting the batch processes in Java using Spring Batch. The plan as it stands is to use Spring Batch on Z/OS and IBM's JDK. I wrote “as it stands” because we read on another forum that Spring Batch has to run in an application server (eg WebSphere or JBoss) and since we want to run the batch processes on the Z/OS directly we would have no other choice but to run Spring Batch in WebSphere. Can this information be confirmed or rebutted?

    Thank you

There is no restriction requiring one to run a batch job in an app server.

There is even a convenience class to run a job from a shell script...

Some people find it convenient to run jobs in a web container (such as tomcat) and use Spring Batch Admin to manage the job executions, but it is in no way required.
